Gold Silver Ratio

The gold/silver ratio divides the price of gold by the price of silver. Today it stands at 72.5.

A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold; a low ratio means silver is relatively expensive. Some investors switch between the two metals when the ratio reaches historical extremes in order to increase their total metal holdings over time.

Historically the ratio was fixed by governments at around 15:1. Since prices began floating freely it has ranged from below 20 to above 120, usually spiking during financial crises.

There is no fixed normal level. Over the last 50 years the ratio has mostly ranged between 40 and 100.

Some investors buy silver when the ratio is high and gold when it is low, aiming to accumulate more ounces over time. It is a relative-value indicator, not a price forecast.
