The Gold-to-Silver Ratio Explained

By ·

The gold-to-silver ratio is the price of one ounce of gold divided by the price of one ounce of silver. If gold trades at $4,000 and silver at $50, the ratio is 80: it takes 80 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold.

Why investors watch it

Because both metals respond to similar forces, their relative value tends to swing within a range over long periods. Some investors switch between the two metals when the ratio reaches historically high or low levels, aiming to increase their total ounces over time.

Historical context

For centuries governments fixed the ratio by law — often between 12 and 16. Since metals began trading freely, the ratio has ranged widely, spiking during financial crises when gold outperforms, and falling during strong industrial booms when silver rallies.
